OVERFLY |
Overfly is a very serious issue, especially in light of flight attendant furloughs. When a flight attendant illegally exceeds his/her contractual flying obligation, that flight attendant denies time to a more junior flight attendant. This affects flight attendants in many ways. The financial impact can be devastating. Not only is it a contractual violation to illegally exceed your flying option; it is also a moral violation. When you exceed your option, you are taking food off the table of your fellow coworker or perhaps running them out of their house and home.
AFA has approached our new Vice President of Inflight Services Sherry Hendry and asked the Company what they plan on doing to deal with this issue. The Company has monitored short block or underfly for many years. The issue of overfly has, for the most part, been ignored. It cannot be ignored any longer. Not when we have flight attendants being furloughed. We have also approached the Company about adding some information to the CATCREW option 2 screen which would show each flight attendant at a glance where they are in terms of hours available to fly within their option.
Every flight attendant knows the option that he/she elected. If a flight attendant has a hardship, he/she can contact his/her supervisor and request to go to a higher option. Those requests are handled on a case-by-case basis. If you need to work more hours, that is what you need to do. Exceeding your option is not the way to handle this issue.
