Crew Accommodations Update June 2008

As many of you are aware, USAirways started nonstop service this week to Vancouver, British Columbia (YVR) out of PHL and to Tucson, AZ (TUS) out of CLT.

Because the company didn't want to wait until the last minute a site inspection was held in both of these markets on May 21st and 22nd..

TUS: We were only given two hotels to look at in this market. I don't know if only two bid our business at the rate this company is willing to pay or if they just left it too late but, of the two, the company chose the AFA recommended hotel. 10% of this all-suite hotel's business is comprised of 4 different Airlines so they are well versed in the needs of crew. There are restaurants, malls and a golf course within walking distance and the hotel is committed to driving crewmembers within a 3 mile radius when the weather makes it too difficult to walk or it is too far. There is a business center with 3 computers for crew use and complimentary wi-fi in the rooms. There is a fridge and microwave in each room. They will be undergoing some renovations within the next few months but have committed to keeping crew in the opposite end of the hotel, particularly since this is a red-eye trip.

YVR: We were also only shown two hotels in this market. One was downtown, which AFA recommended. The other is considered an "Airport" property although it is in the area of Richmond. The company chose this Richmond property which the west has been using for over ten years for their long and short overnights. There is a safe and fridge in every room and a microwave in some of the rooms. There is one computer available for crew use. Internet service is $9.95 per day in the rooms. There are restaurants, malls and movie theatres all within walking distance so, technically, this hotel follows the parameters of our contract language. I expressed concern that the possibility exists of aircraft noise preventing our red-eye crews from getting proper rest before flying all night. If you find that to be the case, please file a hotel complaint form on the Hub. Downtown Vancouver is approximately 35 to 40 minutes away and a $35.00 cab ride. Eventually, there will be a monorail connecting the airport to the city. It is a beautiful city and I'm sure we would have all preferred to overnight there but this Low Cost Carrier chose otherwise.

Thank you again to everyone who has taken the time to write up hotel complaints/comments/compliments on the Hub. Each one is taken into consideration and kept as future ammunition.
