Safety On Board

May 20, 2007

Dear Members,

"Monitor and Challenge" and ISD's

*** Your Immediate Attention Needed ***

As of April 30, 2007 all Active Flight Attendants, have been trained on the new procedures for arming and dis-arming your assigned exit. The "Monitor and Challenge" program started on May first of this month was needed to alleviate, the growing number of Inadvertent Slide Deployments. This change was brought about by the overwhelming success America West had with this procedure. Comparatively, the west operation has experienced fewer ISD's than the east's operation. While this change is a complete overhaul from the previous set of procedures, it is necessary for all flight attendants to become familiar and comfortable with "Monitor and Challenge".

Please continue your vigilance in promoting this procedure and acting accordingly. As you feel more comfortable with the announcements and procedures the number of ISD's should decrease. During the next few months your announcements and actions will be monitored to assure these procedures are accomplished on every flight. Please review the "M & C" during your preflight briefing and continue to fly safe.

Don't forget to contact your local Safety Committee!!!

When you are involved in any incident/accident, remember to also contact your AFA local safety committee. Your local Safety Rep can assist you in filling out the required paperwork to the company and debrief you prior to making a statement to the Company, if necessary. The company may contact AFA about some incidents, but might not contact us about yours. Copy in your local AFA safety committee so we may better assist you.
