Safety On Board

March 26, 2008

Dear Members,

As we are all aware there are many situations and incidents occurring out on the line. However, hearing about them and documenting these situations on an SER-Safety Event Report form and or the PMR-Passenger Misconduct Report is a MUST. We need documentation. By completing the required form(s), we can take steps in correcting the problem(s) and in addition, adding information into the database. The bottom line is this is the best way to help ourselves, our passengers, the FAA and the company. Documentation, documentation, documentation.

**Please feel free to make copies of this and any e-lines and share them with your fellow flight attendants.
  1. If you elect to dress the cabin with pillows and blankets on top of the seats-backs, please remember to remove the excess at the conclusion of the boarding process and place them in an enclosed overhead bin.

  2. When a passengers smokes in the lavatory, even if it is the first offense/incident, it MUST be documented on a PMR, Sec. D. (Smoking Ban Violation) area. There are three (3) other reasons to complete the Smoking Ban Violation: (1) if someone continues to smoke and (2) if someone tampers with a smoke detector (3) if someone smokes in the lavatory.

  3. Flight attendants do not store luggage or any carryon items in the ovens or meal carts. The main reason NOT to store luggage or carryon items in the oven is that it is a fire hazard. Also it is not only a weight issue but also due to health reasons. This is a bad practice and must be stopped immediately.

  4. PSK and LSK kits are only to be stored in their assigned locations in the overhead bins and nowhere else. Do not move them to accommodate more carryon bags.

  5. Fasten Seat Belt sign. Whenever the sign is turned on, an announcement from any working crewmember (pilot or f/a) should be made to the passengers. If flying conditions permit, follow up with a walk through checking seat belts.

  6. Reminder, we do not set up water stations outside lavatories on the Airbus. This is not only a safety issue but also a health risk. NO WATER STATIONS.

  7. NO items may be placed or added to seatback pockets--ESPECIALLY WATER BOTTLES AND COMPUTERS. Only company material and the mandated safety emergency card may be in there. The reason for this is based on the possibility of turbulence and an unforeseen unplanned emergency landing. Not to mention the additional weight of these items are tearing and destroying the seatback pockets.

  8. ALL pets that enter the cabin in an enclosed container must remain in the container at all times. As a crew member, refrain from playing or touching these animals. The pet is to remain in the enclosed carrier under the seat at all times.

  9. Cabin J/S. The only flight attendants authorized to ride the jump seats are mainline flight attendants. Their ID should be displayed above their waist on their outermost garment. Passengers are not permitted to sit or use a j/s for stretching exercises. Only company designated US Airways personnel are authorized to occupy a cabin jumpseat. (P&P 11.1.3)

  10. Jumpseats are to be checked when checking all the other equipment. Pull it out/down and release it to see if it retracts and, on the Airbus a/c, set up the direct view j/s and release it. If it does not fully retract and lock against the wall, notify the captain.

  11. Hangers are to be strapped down with the velcro strap. Whenever a coat is hung up it MUST be strapped down. If the straps are missing, you cannot hang coats. Then, must be placed in an over head bin. The Velcro hanger fastener on the E190 coat hooks will be removed. Once the velcro fastener is removed, place any unused hangers in an overhead bin for taxi, takeoff and landing. See (Sec.3.15.5 Final Cabin Check: Take-off)

  12. Hooks on the bulkheads dividers are for "COATS ONLY" and it is placarded as such. DO NOT LET ANYONE HANG A GARMENT BAG ON THESE HOOKS, no matter of the size or shape.

  13. Emotional support animals must be accompanied by a signed letter from the passenger's physician. The letter must state that the animal is needed for emotional support. The letter must be presented to the agent and the f/a. Yes they MUST have the letter; if missing, other action(s) must be taken. There is no charge if it is an emotional support animal.

  14. Slick galley/entry floors are DANGEROUS. Please notify the C/O and ask him/her to put it in the log book.

  15. Turbulence--this is the season to be extra careful. When the pilot in command says to stay seated, that means ALL flight attendants. Not just main cabin. Do not attempt to get beverages out for F/C. This includes again ALL flight attendants.

  16. Boeing 737-300 beverage carts are NOT to be set up or broken down where they block access to the j/s or the communication center (the interphone and the PA).
