General Procedures-Domestic and Transatlantic

NEW - Utility Flashlights - NEW

All utility flashlights have been removed from all aircraft. F/A's are no longer responsible to preflight slides or slide rafts on all A/C. This is now maintenance's responsibility. (FAEM Alert 01-2002.)

Jumpseat Safety

Seat belt extensions cannot be used on F/A jumpseat harnesses. This is not safe because the extension will diminish the integrity of the jumpseat seatbelt system. If you discover one attached to your jumpseat, file a CSR.

Water Bottle

FAR 121.576 states that any food, beverage or tableware supplied by the airline must be collected prior to take-off and landing. This includes water bottles. Please note: our Shuffle flights (as well as some other airlines) allow pax to pick up a snack bag as they board. There is an exemption in place for this alone. The snack bag and contents must be stowed by the pax for takeoff. However, if you give the pax any food or beverage item from the galley (i.e.: water bottles), you must collect it prior to take-off and landing in order to comply with 121.576.

Child Restraint Devices

CRD's may not be placed forward or aft of any emergency exit row. If you are ever unsure of any procedure regarding the acceptability and proper location of Child Restraint Devices, refer to your FAEM 5-16.

Valet Closets

Crew rollerboards may not be placed in a valet closet of any A/C. This is a violation of US Airways FAA-approved procedure. Only F/A tote bags and one layer of passenger bags are permitted. If your FAEM is in your suitcase, you must remove it in order to keep it at your station.

Flight Deck Doors

Among other security measures adopted since 9/11 are enhancements to the Flight Deck (F/D) doors. The Phase II door is bulletproof, impact resistant, and has a keypad system, which requires that a code be entered for notification and entry. If you work an A/C with a Phase II door, be sure to cover procedures in briefing. Installation has begun and the entire fleet will be fitted in less than one year.

Seatback Pockets

Laptop computers may not be stowed in the seatback pockets for take off and landing.

Security Awareness

For safety and security reasons, F/A's should be evenly distributed in the cabin for boarding, inflight, and ground movement. Please don't congregate in the galleys for extended periods of time. It is procedure to check on pax every 20 minutes during a rest period inflight.

Doors Armed?

We recommend that you only arm/disarm your assigned door. If you must arm/disarm someone else's door, be sure you tell that F/A that you have done so.

When to Arm/Disarm

For departure, arm the doors prior to pushback but never while the entry door is open.

For arrival, disarm the doors as soon as the seat belt sign is turned off. Never disarm doors prior to the sign being turned off.

Inadvertent slide deployments continue to occur. Please remain focused and don't be distracted.
