Should CWA Endorse Candidate
CWA is giving serious consideration to endorsing a candidate for President
in the 2008 race and is surveying all members as part of the decision-making
process. The decision is two-fold: Should CWA endorse a Presidential candidate
and, if so, which candidate would the rank and file support?
As we have all learned since the merger, CWA is truly a democratic union and is
not beholden to a political party. CWA strongly values the input of rank and
file membership as demonstrated in this effort to solicit members' opinions on
an endorsement before taking action. This is one of the values that AFA holds
dear and that convinced us CWA was a good fit when we were looking for a merger
partner.
In a message to all CWA members, CWA Executive Vice President Jeff Rechenbach
wrote: "You represent what is best about CWA, America's most democratic,
member-driven union. That's why I want your views about CWA's presidential
endorsement process. If we endorse a candidate, he or she will have the full
weight of CWA's political resources--but we only want to plan a course of action
if we have overwhelming support from our members."
AFA-CWA is a vocal, active and integral part of CWA, and I want to be certain
that our voices are heard in this process. I strongly encourage each of you to
voice your opinion on this extremely important decision and to make sure the
members in your local council have the same opportunity.
If you have not yet done so, please take some time to reflect on each of the
candidates currently running and research her/his record on labor and flight
attendant issues. If you believe a certain candidate should be endorsed, please
indicate that candidate in the survey. If you believe that the union should not
endorse a candidate at this point in time, please make that clear. The CWA
Executive Board will discuss the question of endorsement at their meeting in
mid-September so please circulate a request for input as soon as possible. Let's
make sure that every AFA-CWA member has the opportunity to weigh in on this
decision by the Wednesday, September 12 deadline.
