We're On Board For Safety!
You know exactly where you were and what you were
doing on 9/11/01. Do you know what your Safety & Health committee was
doing on that fateful day? As soon as we were notified, we were in
constant touch with Corporate Safety, OCC, ALPA, and Inflight to determine the
location of every one of our aircraft and our crews. We created a command
post and contacted each committee member, either at home, or out on a trip.
AFA representatives were at work in hotels across the system & in crew rooms
assisting flight attendants stranded away from home in any way they could.
Once our flights began to operate, we met flight attendants as they came through
the domiciles and escorted them to meet with our AFA EAP/CIRP representatives.
As flight attendants and safety professionals, we
have been trained to handle aircraft emergencies & evacuations, but no one
could have foreseen or prepared us for the tragedy of 9/11/01. It has been
a year since this horrific act of terrorism assaulted our country, our industry,
our profession, and our lives. Our role as safety professionals is more
important than ever. We must not forget that we are On Board For Safety
and stay focused on the safety and security of our flights.
Many flight attendants agree with AFA that the US
Government and US Airways has not stepped up to the plate and provided us with
the highest level of security training and on board procedures to protect our
passengers, ourselves, and our flights. Please don't be discouraged!
In meetings with Congress, the Transportation Security Administration, and
airline management, your AFA representatives are doing everything in their power
to ensure your safety and security.
YOU can make a difference and help your Safety
Committee in our efforts! Don't become complacent. Maintain
vigilance in all safety and security procedures. Report safety and
security incidents and concerns to your AFA Safety & Health Committee and
the company, in writing. It is difficult, if not impossible, to address
important safety and security issues without your written reports.
Communicate your safety and security concerns in
writing to your Safety & Health Committee. We cannot be effective
without your help!
You can make a difference!
