HURRICANE KATRINA EVACUATION FLIGHTS
At the request of FEMA, US Airways along with other commercial airlines, will provide aircraft and crews to assist in the evacuation of New Orleans. The flights began yesterday. US Airways has dedicated one Boeing 737 and crews toward the effort to evacuate up to 25,000 hurricane-stricken residents of the city.
Our first flight departed CLT yesterday afternoon but was ordered by FEMA officials to return to CLT before reaching New Orleans. Aircraft are arriving and departing MSY at the rate of four per hour. The logistics of moving people to the airport and emplaning them on the aircraft proved difficult and therefore our first flight was aborted. The volunteer crew from the first flight included:
CLT F/A Linda Ball
CLT F/A Sheila Burnette
CLT F/A Carletta Farley
CLT F/A Pamela Shields
US Airways is scheduled to resume its part of the operation today with a flight scheduled to depart CLT at 1100 EST. The crew will ferry to MSY and then fly two round trips to Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio, Texas. The crew will overnight in IAH and is scheduled to fly two round trips again tomorrow. The volunteer crew for this mission includes:
CLT F/A Carol Hill
CLT F/A Walt Calloway
CLT F/A Margot Calloway
CLT F/A Tamara Mercadle
Many of you have called crew scheduling to volunteer your time and services to this effort. On behalf of the MEC, I would like to extend my personal thanks and prayers to all those who have volunteered and those selected to participate in this heroic effort. I am sure in the days to come our services will be needed again and it is with pride I can say our members will be a part of the relief effort.
Thank you
Mike Flores
MEC President
