Carry Over Pairings (Month-to-Month Transition) with
Weekend Touch Restriction:
We would like to make you aware of a clarification involving
month-to-month carry-over pairings that occur over the weekends.
The clarification will allow you to pick up a like (same scheduled duty
days) pairing while not being responsible to touch the weekend day that
your first pairing of the next month touches.
For example:
If a Flight Attendant has a lead-out pairing that is:
Wednesday October 29
Thursday October 30
Friday October 31
Saturday November 1
And their first pairing of next month is:
Saturday November 1
Sunday November 2
If the Flight Attendant flies the carry-over pairing, the pairing in the
new month is automatically dropped once the Flight Attendant signs in
for the carry-over pairing.
What has happened in the past is that scheduling would tell the Flight
Attendant that if they worked their scheduled last pairing of the month,
they would NOT have to touch Sunday November 1.
However, scheduling also told the Flight Attendant that if they went on
the AI/L (bid sheet) and trip improved, even if they were picking up a
pairing with the same number of days (29, 30, 31 and 1), that they would
be responsible for touching Sunday (November 1) because they "altered"
their schedule. AFA argued that this is not, nor has been, the intent of
the language. The company has now agreed with the Union's interpretation
of the language.
Therefore, if you are scheduled to work a pairing that carries over into
the new month, using the example above, you can trip improve for another
4-day pairing and you will NOT BE OBLIGATED to touch Sunday November 1.
Keep in mind the following: If a Flight Attendant decides to trip
improve off of their carry-over pairing and picks up a paring that does
not touch (and knock out) the first trip in the month, the weekend
restriction would apply.
In the above example if the Flight Attendant picked up a three day
pairing on the 29, 30 and 31 the Flight Attendant would be obligated to
touch any weekend days his/her pairing in the new month spanned.
