Dear Members,
AFA PRESS RELEASE - October 1, 2009
AFA-CWA PRAISES CREW OF HISTORIC FLIGHT AS
'MIRACLE ON THE HUDSON' PILOTS RETURN TO WORK
Washington, DC - The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) today
offered congratulations to Captain Chesley Sullenberger and First Officer Jeff
Skiles as the pair reunited in the cockpit for first time since landing US
Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River on January 15. AFA-CWA represents US
Airways flight attendants Donna Dent, Sheila Dail and Doreen Welsh who
successfully evacuated 150 passengers from the plane as it sank into the river.
"It was the skill and professionalism of the entire crew that made all the
difference on January 15. Today, the world continues to stand in admiration of
the five crew members who saved so many lives," said Mike Flores, AFA-CWA US
Airways President.
"Donna, Sheila and Doreen are a true testament to the strength and resilience of
all flight attendants that love this profession and take seriously our role as
aviation safety professionals. The evacuation of Flight 1549 reminded everyone
around the world in stunning fashion, exactly what role and purpose flight
attendants serve - inflight safety professionals. It was the composure and
professionalism of these highly skilled flight attendants that saved the lives
of 150 passengers. Because of their actions, flight attendants today are now
looked at in a new light.
"We continue to be so proud of the entire Flight 1549 crew and wish Captain
Sullenberger and First Officer Skiles all the best," added Flores.
For over 60 years, the Association of Flight Attendants has
been serving as the voice for flight attendants in the workplace, in the
aviation industry, in the media and on Capitol Hill. More than 50,000 flight
attendants at 20 airlines come together to form AFA-CWA, the world’s largest
flight attendant union. AFA is part of the 700,000- member strong Communications
Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO. Visit us at www.afanet.org.
