AFA US Airways MEC E-Line for November 12, 2003

In this E-Line
  • Merger Q&A

We have received a number of questions about the merger vote that is currently being conducted. Two questions, in particular, have been asked over and over, so we would like to address them here.

Merger Q & A

Q: If not all AFA airlines vote to merge, do only the ones that voted for it merge with CWA?

A: All AFA carriers go or none of us go. On Dec. 1, the ballots of all AFA members who voted will be counted. If a majority of all valid ballots cast vote FOR the merger with CWA, then all of AFA will begin the process of merging. If a majority votes AGAINST, the merger will not happen for anyone, and the dues increase will be implemented as of Jan. 1, 2004.

Q: Will the result of this merger vote change the AFA Merger Policy in the event of an airline merger?

A: No. The AFA Merger Policy remains intact. The vote is solely to determine if AFA as a union will partner and merge with CWA to increase our strength, as a union, or if we will remain a separate union. The merger vote has nothing to do with the corporations of US Airways or United Airlines, or any other airline. Our airlines will remain separate. The only ones who can change that are the management executives at our airlines, and there’s no talk of any merger of carriers.
