NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE

The Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) and the company met in session in CLT on November 6-8. The results were less than satisfying-in fact they were dreadful.

I have said it before and I will say it again-we are not in concessionary bargaining. The industry and the airline continue to prosper. US Airways' year to date profit for the first nine month of 2007 is a whopping 506 million dollars. That compared to 292 million dollars for the equivalent nine month period in 2006 means that something is going right. Is any of that money ending up on the bargaining table? Last week's company proposals dealing with economic sections such as Vacation, Sick and On the Job Injury clearly indicate a resounding NO.

As we move into the economic sections, it is becoming increasingly clear the company remains convinced that we are somehow still in bankruptcy mode with concessions from both workgroups needed in order for the company to 'live well and prosper'. That is not meant as a joke but what we are receiving back from the company at the bargaining table is indeed from another place in time. There are significant differences in both East and West agreements in the three sections, however neither group is going to give anything up or remain at the status quo.

VACATION-

The West has more vacation days paid at a higher average daily rate than the East concessionary agreements provide for. East Flight Attendants have given up vacation days and daily rate for vacation pay at an alarming amount as the result of two bankruptcies and three concessionary agreements. For example, in 1993 the top vacation tier of 25 or more years of service was 44 days of vacation paid at a maximum of 6:50 per day. In 2007, a 25 year East Flight Attendant accrues 28 days of vacation paid at a maximum of 4:00 per day.

To be more specific, in 1993 I was a ten year Flight Attendant and accrued 28 days of vacation. Some 14 years later I still only accrue 28 days of vacation.

Besides the days of vacation in the two agreements (East and West) there is another significant difference. The East vacation system is an accrual system- meaning for each month a Flight Attendant is not in active status for 15 days the vacation accrual for the next year is prorated accordingly. The West system is a grant system- meaning as long as a West Flight Attendant is in active status for any portion of the year they are granted the total vacation allotment for the following year based on their vacation schedule.

The JNC proposed the East accrual system which saves the Company money. Money we are not giving away, but money that would be put back into the number of vacation days per year and increased daily vacation pay rates.

The Company's counter proposal contained the mechanics of the East vacation bidding system with some improvements, but contained the East Vacation Day chart and no daily rate increases. The proposal represented absolutely NO gain for East Flight Attendants and a significant decrease to the West Flight Attendants vacation days-in some cases as much as a 14 day loss per year

The proposal was beyond comprehension and was indeed an insult to both the East and West Flight Attendants.

SICK-

I am sick of it. This negotiating committee will fight to the end to provide Sick at 100% pay/credit. There is nothing more to say.

ON THE JOB INJURY (OJI)-

Over the years the East Flight Attendants have taken a tremendous hit in salary continuance-down from 36 months to the current 6 months for non aircraft accident/incident on the job injuries.

The company has so far resisted any proposal that would increase the salary continuance timeframe. And now to add insult to injury (pun intended) the Company has proposed that in order to be eligible for salary continuance a Flight Attendant must accept a light duty assignment if one is available. That will never happen.

The JNC and the company are scheduled to meet again next week in PHX. The JNC is committed to bringing out an agreement that meets the needs of our members. My hope is that someday I can quit writing updates-that will only happen with an agreement that works for you.
