AFA-CWA Merger

By now you may have received information from AFA International regarding a proposed merger with the CWA. Your union did not take this consideration lightly and the ultimate decision on this proposed merger is in your hands. AFA's financial crisis led to this decision to consider a merger with a more financially secure union. The ballot that is being sent to the membership asks that you decide if you are in favor of a merger with CWA. A majority of Board delegates support this as the best option. In addition over two-thirds voted to adopt a contingency budget for next year that will go into effect only if the merger is turned down. That contingency budget includes a $6 per month dues increase that will begin January 1, 2004 if there is no merger.

Many of you may think either choice is not palatable but the reality is that in order for our union to continue doing the work of the union, our financial crisis must be addressed. The AFA Board of Directors, which is made up of all the Local Council Presidents of all the airlines represented by AFA, made the decision to send a ballot to the membership giving you the final choice regarding an affiliation with the CWA. Your MEC Officers are not voting members of the AFA Board and we ask that you forward any question or comments to your Local Council Presidents.

Meeting with Dave Siegel

Your MEC President and Acting MEC Vice-President will be meeting with CEO Dave Siegel on Friday. He has asked for a meeting to give us an update on the "State of the Airline." We will update you after our meeting with Mr. Siegel.

Recall of MEC Vice-President

At last week's MEC meeting in Boston, the MEC voted to recall MEC Vice-President Pam Hook. I would like to thank Pam for all her hard work and dedication to the flight attendants while she was MEC Vice-President.

At the present time, MEC Secretary-Treasurer Leslie Miller will also serve as Acting MEC Vice-President until the MEC elects a new Vice- President.
