U.S. Begins
Taking Over Screening at Airports
The New York Times May
1, 2002
By MATTHEW L. WALD
BALTIMORE, April 30
The nation's first fully federalized team of airport security screeners,
who officials promise are better trained, better motivated and kinder than
those employed by private contractors, was put to work this morning, assuming
duties at two of Baltimore Washington International Airport's five piers.
The 210 screeners began reporting
at 4 a.m. and promptly started waving metal detectors, studying X-ray images
and inspecting passengers' shoes. They are the first of a new generation
that will take over all screening at the airport in six weeks and at 428
more around the country within the next seven months.

Flight Attendants Aim for
Capitol Hill
September 11, Airline Bail-Out
Sparks Workers to Run for Congress
WASHINGTON, DC
Elle Kurpiewski and Stevan Drobac, Jr., two flight attendants represented
by the Association of Flight Attendants, AFL-CIO, are making history as
the first two AFA flight attendants to seek Congressional seats.
Kurpiewski, a United Airlines
flight attendant based in Los Angeles, is challenging incumbent Mary Bono
(R-CA) in the 45th Congressional District. Kurpiewski has been a
part of AFA's legislative affairs committee and active in Democratic politics
in California for 25 years.
Drobac, a US Airways flight
attendant based in Pittsburgh and retired police officer, is taking on
Mark Purcell in the primary in order to unseat Melissa Hart (R-PA) in the
4th Congressional District. Drobac has taken an 18-month voluntary leave
of absence from the airline to allow a less-senior flight attendant to
keep working.
Both candidates have earned
AFA s endorsement with a strong commitment to aviation security, protecting
workers retirement and pension benefits and supporting the freedom
to choose a union. The candidates campaigns were motivated
by the events of September 11 and the subsequent Congressional bailout
of the airlines. Congress appropriated $15 billion in aid to the
airlines and refused to provide financial assistance to the 100,000 aviation
employees who had been furloughed or terminated as a result of the terrorist
attacks.
