US Airways to Meet with MEC Special Advisory Committee

Last week, US Airways management showed leadership from all the unions a broad outline of their 7 - year plan including their desire to cut $1.2 billion annually in permanent cost reductions, with $950 million annually coming from unionized employees. (This is a correction to a previous E-line message.)

AFA is in the process of analyzing this plan.

This week, the Company will specify what it wants in terms of sacrifices from the flight attendants in a meeting with the AFA MEC Special Advisory Committee on Tuesday, May 21.

The Special Advisory Committee consists of MEC President Karen Lascoli, LEC President Buddy Brannon (BOS), LEC President Teddy Xidas (PIT), AFA Staff Attorney Stefani Brown, and from AFA's Collective Bargaining Department, Attorney Ben Elliott.

Following the meeting, AFA MEC President Karen Lascoli will call a special meeting of the entire Master Executive Council, scheduled for May 22 & 23, to discuss the information and how we are going to respond on your behalf.

We're committed to helping this airline survive and thrive in the future, but we still need to see exactly what is asked of us before we even discuss sacrifices.

Management must understand clearly that anything we discuss with them must contain safeguards that protect the future of our flight attendants and their families.

So far, CEO Siegel has pledged that labor cost reductions will:

  •  impact lowest-paid employees the least
  • involve management employee participation
  • include pursuit of protection of aggregate work force levels
  • feature employee participation in "the up side through profit-sharing"
In addition to cutting costs, the Company also plans to:
  • apply for a federally guaranteed loan
  • increase revenue
  • enter into new code-sharing agreements
  • add a significant number of small jets, if it gets labor agreement
Until the full details of the Company's plan are unveiled, don't pass on rumors. Stop speculation by getting the facts in E-Lines, on our website: www.afausairways.org , or by calling our Hotline at 800-654-3143.
