US Airways Presented its Business Plan to Unions
During Thursday's presentations, US Airways management showed the union leadership their overall plan. Overall, management wants $950 million over 7 years from the unionized employees as a group. AFA is in the process of analyzing it.

AFA will hear the specifics of what they want from the flight attendants in our meeting on May 21. During this meeting, AFA will provide management with input about the plan.

We are going to focus on pushing management to do everything possible to increase revenue; lack of revenue is clearly where this airlines problems are centered.

It seems that this management does have a plan to increase revenue that would significantly strengthen the carrier through code-shares and other alliances, expanded use of regional jets and through a strengthening and more efficient use of our hub airports.

Very importantly, management also said they are committed to maintaining the size of the mainline operation, which is important to maintaining jobs for flight attendants.

Anything we discuss with management will also focus on safeguards that will protect the future of our flight attendants and their families.

Are you going to give them the concessions they need?

We still don't know what they want from the flight attendants; this will outlined out in the May 21 meeting. While we're committed to helping this airline survive and thrive in the future, we still need to see exactly what they're asking of us before we commit to anything specific.

Congress Honors Flight Attendants

WASHINGTON - Congress honored the "daily heroism and courage" displayed by flight attendants in a concurrent resolution introduced by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Reps. Don Young (R-AK), John Mica (R-FL), James Oberstar (D-MN) and William Lipinski (D-IL). The resolution was read into the Congressional record in the Senate on May 14 and in the House of Representatives on May 9.

The resolution honors the courage and dedication of all flight attendants while performing their duties. It makes special mention of the flight attendants who were lost in the terrorist attacks on September 11 and the cabin crew members who subdued attempted shoe bomber Richard Reid and prevented Pablo Moreira from breaking into the cockpit on United Airlines' flight 855.

The resolution was read into the Senate record as follows:

Honoring the heroism and courage displayed by airline flight attendants on a daily basis.

Whereas over 100,000 men and women in the United States serve as flight attendants;

Whereas flight attendants dedicate themselves to serving and protecting their passengers;

Whereas flight attendants react to dangerous situations as the first line of defense of airline passengers;Whereas safety and security are the primary concernsof flight attendants;

Whereas flight attendants evacuate passengers from an airplane in emergency situations;

Whereas flight attendants defend passengers against hijackers, terrorists and abusive passengers;

Whereas flight attendants handle in-flight medical emergencies;

Whereas flight attendants perform routine safety and service duties on board the aircraft;

Whereas 25 flight attendants lost their lives aboard four hijacked flights on September 11, 2001;

Whereas five flight attendants helped prevent United flight 93 from reaching its intended target on September 11, 2001;
Whereas flight attendants provided assistance to passengers across the United States who had their flights diverted on September 11;
Whereas flight attendants on American Airlines flight 63 helped subdue Richard Reid on December 22, 2001, thereby preventing him from detonating an explosive device in his shoe intended to bring down the airplane and kill all 185 passengers and 12 crew members on board; and
Whereas flight attendants helped prevent Pablo Moreira, A Uruguayan citizen, from breaking into the cockpit on February 7, 2002 during United flight 855 from Miami to Buenos Aires:

Now therefore be it resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring),

That Congress Express its profound gratitude for the faithful service provided flight attendants' to make air travel safe;

Honors the courage and dedication of flight attendants;

Supports all the flight attendants who continue to display heroism on a daily basis, as they have been doing before, during and after September 11, 2001;

and  Shall send a copy of this resolution to a family member of the flight attendants killed on September 11, 2001.

PHX Ramada Valley Ho is closing its doors

The PHX Ramada Valley Ho is closing its doors on Friday  May 17, 2002.  The crews will be moved to the Ramada Downtown location until another hotel can be found.  The deadline is June 15, 2002 for a new property to be found and utilized.  Although the Company has assured me that they do not intend to use the downtown property for long PHX RON's,  they have still requested that crews provide them with feedback concerning the downtown property.  A site inspection is planned for May 28, 2002.  The list of properties provided by the Company include the Ramada as well as other downtown locations.  The Committee does not feel that a downtown property is acceptable.  The amount of activities in this area is very limited.  Safety is a major concern in the downtown area after the close of the business day and on weekends.  Please complete an OF310 either by using the ONLINE OF-310 or by filling out the paper form and  putting it in my mailbox (Audrey Federoff-Lindner, PIT based F/A) .  The form can also be sent by Company mail.  The Company needs to hear from you regarding your dissatisfaction with a downtown property.  Don't worry about filling in specific dates. These forms are also used for general information.  We need to make sure they hold up to their "assurance" and not use a downtown facility.

If you have any suggestions for properties, please feel free to contact me at alindner@afausairways.org or 724-942-3039.
