AFA MEC LEGISLATIVE NEWSFLASH

FMLA Flight Crew Technical Correction Act, H.R. 2744, unanimously passes the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee.

A committee hearing and mark up of H.R. 2744, the FMLA Technical Correction Act, was held today in Washington DC. A mark up is a required step in the legislative process and allows for a member of a committee to offer amendments to legislation. Any member of a committee can offer an amendment. Before a bill can be presented on the floor of the House for a full vote it must be passed in committee.

An amendment that clarified some of the definitions of the bill was offered by Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-CA, as a replacement to the original bill and passed unanimously by a voice vote. The amendment provides FMLA coverage for any flight attendant who works or gets paid for 60% of an airline's guarantee but, added a requirement that a Flight Crew member must work or get paid for at least 504 hours in a calendar year to qualify for FMLA.

Once the amendment was approved the bill was ready for a final vote by the entire Education and Labor Committee. By a roll call vote; 43 members voting in favor, 0 members voting against and 6 members absent, H.R. 2744 passed. The bill is now ready for a final vote in the U.S. House of Representatives.

We anticipate passage by the House as early as next week but, due to the Memorial Day Recess, no later than the second week in June. Thank you to every one who wrote letters and called your Representative urging their support of this bill.

Our focus now shifts to the U.S. Senate. Today there are 25 co-sponsors on S. 2059 the Senate bill including bill author Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY. AFA has set a goal of 66 Co-sponsors in the Senate. Please keep up the good work and make sure you call both of your U.S. Senators. Tell them you want them to co-sponsor S. 2059!
