US Airways Flight Attendant Frustration
and Fury Grows at US Airways

Continued Management Failures Unite Labor Groups

Phoenix AZ - Flight Attendants at US Airways and America West Airlines, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA), took their message to the streets today and protested the continued failure of US Airways’ management to deliver on promises made to employees, passengers, and investors.

Demonstrating their frustration over deteriorating operations at US Airways that are directly affecting passenger travel plans, and fury over the lack of significant progress in contract negotiations for a merged agreement, Flight Attendants, as well as pilots whom are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l (ALPA), and other labor groups, picketed the 16th Annual International Aviation Symposium in Phoenix, Ariz., where top executives from US Airways joined their counterparts from other airlines and government officials to discuss “New Strategies for Success.”

“The failure by US Airways management to recognize the value and worth of flight attendants on the job and at the bargaining table is an ‘Age Old Strategy for Disaster’,” said Gary Richardson, America West Master Executive Council President.

Unproductive contract negotiations between US Airways and AFA-CWA have been ongoing for the last fourteen months with only a few non-economic issues resolved.

Employee morale along with on-time performance is also suffering as hardworking frontline personnel are still picking up the pieces and bearing the brunt of passenger frustration from a mismanaged reservation system migration in March that disrupted travel plans for thousands of US Airways customers. Delays in obtaining a FAA Single Operating Certificate and a single Flight Operations System are further eroding Flight Attendant confidence in management’s ability to successfully merge America West Airlines and US Airways.

“There is no such thing as a "Full Service-Low Cost Airline". said Mike Flores US Airways Master Executive Council President. “That model, sold to Wall Street, only works if you find employees willing to work for nothing and customers willing to pay for nothing. Neither will continue to happen.”

For over 60 years, the Association of Flight Attendants has been serving as the voice for flight attendants in the workplace, in the aviation industry, in the media and on Capitol Hill.  More than 55,000 flight attendants at 20 airlines come together to form AFA-CWA, the world’s largest flight attendant union. AFA is part of the 700,000-member strong Communications Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO. Visit us at www.afanet.org.

Thank you,

Mike Flores, President
