MidAtlantic Negotiations Update
Training classes for MidAtlantic began on March 1, 2004. As many
of you know, MidAtlantic is the new Small Jet division of US
Airways. The MidAtlantic negotiating committee continues to
address the many outstanding issues that revolve around
MidAtlantic. We do not yet have a comprehensive agreement on all
issues for MidAtlantic. The negotiating committee continues to
press the Company for additional meeting dates to resolve these
issues, but has not yet received a positive response from the
Company.
Many important issues remain unresolved. For example, the
committee and the Company still remain apart on the effective
date for company contribution for medical benefits and 401(k)
company match. The negotiating committee believes that US
Airways flight attendants should receive the company
contribution from the first day of employment. However, the
Company still insists on a six month waiting period for medical
contribution and a one year waiting period for the 401(k) match.
AFA maintains the position that US Airways flight attendants
qualify as soon as they begin working for MidAtlantic for these
benefits. These, among many other issues, are currently on the
negotiating table.
Per the December 2002 agreement, AFA and the Company agreed that
MidAtlantic would be a division of US Airways, thus active
flight attendants should be able to bid into MidAtlantic.
However, despite our prior agreement, the Company currently is
not allowing active mainline flight attendants to bid to
MidAtlantic. Another issue that remains open is the length of
the commitment period to MidAtlantic. While AFA has made several
proposals around this issue, the Company is currently holding to
a six-month initial commitment period to MidAtlantic. Please
keep in mind that, according to the Company, failure to complete
the initial commitment period may affect your recall rights back
to mainline at US Airways.
These are just a few examples about the differences between AFA
and management. Please contact your LEC if you have any
questions concerning employment and/or training at MidAtlantic.
The first scheduled revenue day for MidAtlantic is set for April
4th with proving runs and mini-evacuations to take place in
March.
