  • Clarifying Aircraft Tidying
  • Accessing The Hub
  • AFA Local Numbers
Dear Members,
Once again there seems to be confusion regarding what stations receive "tidying duties". We will try to be more CLEAR, however, it appears every time something is sent out by the MEC, more confusion or made-up rumors start to spread around.

The following should prove more clear, so with all do respect pay attention. If it still is not clear, please confer with your local union representatives who know this issue thoroughly.

Upon the Effective Date of the 2004 AFA-US Airways Agreement, Flight Attendants may be required to complete cabin cleaning duties, as defined below, at every domestic station and Nassau (NAS) following every such flight segment, with the exception of the following: transoceanic flight segments, NTI segments other than NAS, and flight

CLARITY

Bear with us folks your MEC will get this straight, including me....

After discussing this with the MEC and Perry Hayes, the Negotiating Chair, his words below, (as he was one of THE negotiators of the language)...

Per Perry Hayes words:

The crew working the segment SJU-CLT does not clean no matter what. Not if they are changing planes or staying on the plane. Who cleans in CLT is not my concern. That is the Company's concern. On an NTI segment like SJU to CLT, our flight attendants do not clean no matter what

This is final on this issue!

segments immediately preceding the scheduled RON of the aircraft or immediately following a scheduled red-eye, or immediately following any segment that originates or terminates in an airport west of Kansas City.

"Such cabin cleaning duties shall be defined as, and limited to, the following: collecting papers and refuse in the cabin of the aircraft; crossing seatbelts; stowing pillows and blankets in the overhead compartments; removing visible items from the seatback pockets; and collecting and stowing magazines as applicable. A flight attendant will not be required to perform such cabin cleaning duties after the conclusion of his/her duty day."

To clarify, flight attendants do not perform Aircraft Tidying duties:

1) Following a Transoceanic flight segment;

2) Following non-transoceanic flight segments other than Nassau (NAS) (for example the Caribbean, Mexico);

3) Following a flight segment immediately preceding the RON of the AIRCRAFT;

4) Following a scheduled red-eye flight segment;

5) Following any flight segment that originates or terminates in an airport west of Kansas City.

Our duties are no different than they were prior to the 2004 Agreement. The stations where we perform our Tidying duties has expanded, but the duties themselves have not.

We do the following and nothing more:

1) Collect papers and refuse in the CABIN of the aircraft;

2) Cross seatbelts;

3) STOW pillows and blankets;

4) Remove VISIBLE items from seatback pockets;

5) Collect and stow magazines, as applicable.

That’s it - nothing more. If it’s not in the cabin of the aircraft (and lavatories are not in the cabin of the aircraft, nor are trash containers in the galleys), then we don’t touch it. If it’s not an item outlined above, "we don’t do it."
