Dear Members, There have been some issues that have been arising between flight attendants who are picking up trips in other domiciles and those flight attendants who are in domicile regarding position selection. Please familiarize yourselves with section 9-25 and 9-26 of the May 2000 agreement. These provisions HAVE NOT changed. With regard to flight attendants deadheading from other domiciles, section 9-26 d. reads as follows: d. If a trip originates with a deadhead flight, position selection for all vacated lineholders positions shall be based on seniority among the flight attendants originating the trip and shall be determined in accordance with the same parameters in para. a-c. However, if a flight attendant originates the trip at the downline station, such determination of positions shall be made prior to the scheduled departure of the trip's first working flight segment. Examples are given in sec. 9-26. If you are in your domicile and not the primary lineholder on a position, and the trip has been picked up from open time or assigned to a reserve, the position will be determined :30 before departure. In this same instance, IF THE TRIP IS BEING PICKED UP BY FLIGHT ATTENDANTS COMING FROM ANOTHER DOMICILE, position selection will be determined :30 before departure or boarding of customers, and the flight attendants coming from another domicile bring their seniority with them. Please note that regardless of what domicile the trip originates from, if you are not the primary lineholder that owns a position on that trip, you do not own the position off the bid sheet, nor does a reserve who is assigned the trip in their base. All position selections are based on the seniority of all flight attendants, whether reserve or lineholder in base or OUT OF BASE and will be determined :30 minutes before scheduled departure. With regard to flight attendants who are on TDY assignments, their assignment of trips are only after all reserve flight attendants in that domicile have been utilized. This provision has nothing to do with selection of positions on the actual trip. All flight attendants use their seniority for position selection if they are NOT the primary lineholder of that trip. I suggest all flight attendants copy and carry this e-line with you for clarification if their is a dispute that may arise. Please pass the word. Teddy MEC President -------------- FLIGHT ATTENDANT UNION LEADERS DISCUSS MERGER America West and US Airways flight attendant union leaders hold first merger session Washington, D.C. - Flight attendant union leaders from America West Airlines and US Airways held their first joint merger session Wednesday, June 8 in Washington, DC. The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) represents both flight attendant groups. AFA-CWA International President Patricia Friend organized the meeting, which is mandated by the union's Constitution and Bylaws. The purpose of the meeting is to orient both sides on the union's merger policy, which governs contract rules and seniority issues. "The America West/US Airways merger will provide long-term job security for flight attendants at both airlines. This merger involves the complex task of integrating two flight attendant seniority lists and negotiating a merged contract," said Friend. "This meeting brought the two parties together to initiate that process." "Both sides agree that negotiating fence agreements in order to protect flight attendants at each base is an initial and necessary step," said Bill McGlashen, AFA America West Master Executive Council President. "Fence agreements put up an imaginary fence around each base and effectively say that all known flying conducted in that base shall be done by flight attendants already in that base for a period of time." Seniority is a sensitive issue in the airline industry because it governs a flight attendant's monthly schedule including the holidays they have off, which aircraft they work, and the types of flights they staff. "The two sides have met and now have a clear picture of how we will make this merger work," said Teddy Xidas, AFA US Airways Master Executive Council President. "We are all aware of the timelines ahead and are looking forward to working with each other." 75 Years of Safety & Service: 60 Years of Unity This year marks the 75th anniversary of the flight attendant profession and the 60th anniversary of the Association of Flight Attendants. More than 46,000 flight attendants, join together to form AFA-CWA, the world's largest flight attendant union. AFA is part of the 700,000-member strong Communications Workers of America, AFL-CIO.
