Notes
from the US Airways Negotiating Committee Message to Members 6-25-02
Wednesday, 6/26/02
- Your AFA Negotiating Committee met with management on Tuesday 6/25 and
on Wednesday 6/26. The MEC meets on 6/27 and the Committee will likely
meet with management, as well.
The other labor groups have
continued their negotiations. The pilots' latest proposal increased the
savings they are offering to the airline to help keep it out of bankruptcy
and get the loan guarantee from the government. Our proposal on 6/25 also
increased our participation in the restructuring of the company. The cost
savings we now have on the table total $63.1 million per year, and we're
asking for a return back to flight attendants for agreeing to the cuts.
Management is still insisting that we meet their proposal (the company's
proposal is posted HERE)
that totals $90 million per year.
Needless to say, we still
do not have an agreement with management. And we're not sure what the final
deal will look like, yet. One thing we're sure of is that whatever we end
up with will be a significant cut in what we have today.
The Committee keeps reminding
itself that this is our chance to negotiate a deal with concessions that
total LESS THAN $90 million per year. If management goes into bankruptcy
and we don't have a deal, management has made it clear that it will seek
AT LEAST the $90 million in cost savings it has asked from the flight attendants
(management may in fact target us for more cuts if we don't reach an agreement
prior to a bankruptcy filing) and we likely will not get any return on
those cuts.
The Committee's goal is to
reach the best deal possible under these impossible circumstances. We have
received hundreds of messages from flight attendants who are angry about
the situation we are in. We share your anger. Every person on the Committee
is agonizing over every decision we make because of the effect we know
each cut will have on us and our coworkers. The hundreds of messages of
support that we have received help us. Thank you for those messages.
We will report out to you
again after we meet with management. Until then, keep flying and
keep up to date with the Hotline - 800-654-3143, Website - www.afausairways.org
