Dear Members,

I am posting this issue regarding some options on retirement medical, again, because of misinformation circulating out on the line with respect to retirement medical.

If you have submitted a retirement date and are rethinking your decision because of fear of limited health insurance options for retirement medical, please read the information provided below. There is no guarantee that retirees will have either COBRA or the Access Plan if the Company should cease to exist, however this information should clear up some of the concerns and bad information that is discussed out on the jump seats regarding retirement medical.

Retiring flight attendants have two (2) company sponsored options for retiree health insurance: (*There are independent plans you can purchase before you retire that are HCTC qualifying if you live in a state that has a qualifying plan). And if you live in a state where there is no qualifying HCTC plan, there is still medical health insurance to the retirees, specifically, those with preexisting conditions offered by the Company.

Please read on:

1. The ACCESS plan is the same coverage as the active employees. The monthly premium is slightly higher than the full premium and the flight attendant cannot be denied insurance based on a pre-existing condition. (This premium is projected to go up every year, just as for the active employee). This premium may be paid out of pocket and/or deducted from the flight attendant's sick bank. The retiring flight attendants are eligible to remain in the ACCESS plan until age 65. This plan is not HCTC qualified.

2. COBRA is the same coverage as the active employees. The monthly premium is 2% higher than the full premium (for administrative expenses) and the flight attendant cannot be denied insurance based on a pre-existing condition. This premium may be paid out of pocket and/or deducted from the flight attendant's sick bank. The retiring flight attendants are eligible to remain in the COBRA plan for 18 months and then must secure health insurance on their own. This plan is HCTC qualified. The independent plan needed after COBRA should be purchased before retirement for HCTC considerations. You should speak to your HCTC representative when making a decision to participate in HCTC and criteria.

Please reference page one (1) of the December 2004 tentative agreement for the details. If you need even more information, please refer to your AFA Local representative who can offer you some guidelines on general information
