U.S.
Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta will propose next month
that Reagan National Airport be allowed to return to its pre-Sept.
11 number of commercial flights, a spokesman said yesterday.
Chet
Lunner said that Mineta will present a full reopening plan to the White
House, Secret Service and other agencies that have controlled the airport's
fate since the terrorist hijackings. That group would make the decision,
Lunner said.
"It's
a proposal," Lunner said. "It's not a guarantee."
Mineta
has always wanted National to return to full operations because of its
importance to the Washington region and the country's aviation system,
Lunner said. Mineta will propose the full reopening sometime in March,
Lunner said, because airline security "is becoming more robust all the
time."
