Dear Members,
As
2005 draws to a close and on behalf of the MEC I want to express my
appreciation for
all of your efforts during what has been a very difficult year for our airline
and our profession.
At the beginning of the year we were faced with a ratification vote on our third concessionary agreement in two years. With the looming uncertainty of bankruptcy court each of us had to make a very difficult decision over a contract that would alter our jobs and our lives.
As the year progressed the membership was faced with the implementation of the new contract and every day it seemed there was something new to deal with. The MEC and your local representatives tried their best to help educate and provide guidance as these changes took place. We struggled with a lack of information from the company as they focused most of their efforts on the bankruptcy case and then the merger with America West. Our goal was to provide the membership with as much information as we could. Sometimes we succeeded and sometimes we did not, but it was never for a lack of commitment.
The merger with America West presented an initial challenge for our leadership and the members regarding seniority. The Date of Hire challenge caused a great deal of anxiety but I remained confident our members and leaders would be able to convey our position to the AFA Board of Directors. Through your support and effort that is exactly what happened.
As the merger progresses we will face different challenges as the new management team is assembled and the corporate headquarters move to PHX. Your AFA representatives will do everything possible during the transition period to insure that our contract is followed and past practices are honored. During 2006 we will be negotiating a merged contract between the two labor groups. We are no longer in bankruptcy and in fact; now work for the most financially stable airline in the industry. We will do everything possible to negotiate a contract that acknowledges that. We also recognize the tremendous sacrifices made by our members to allow US Airways to get to this point. We will not allow those sacrifices to be ignored by management.
During the year we have seen a reduction in our workforce and we have all seen friends leave the company either through retirement, resignation or the VFLR. As union leaders our objective is to grow so it is with great sadness that we say farewell but we wish them all success.
On behalf of the MEC, local representatives and volunteers I want to wish everyone a happy holiday season.
In solidarity,
Mike Flores
MEC President
The US Airways Master Executive Council
