Dear Members,

Reserve Vacation Slide Clarification

It has become apparent that some reserves are unfamiliar with a change that was made to the vacation adjustment provision whereby the benefit was enhanced during the last round of negotiations. This clarification will help reserves better understand the enhancement which was made to Section 7 Vacation.C.3. (Vacation Adjustments). Refer to the 2004 AFA Flight Attendant Agreement section 7-3, which states, "A reserve flight attendant, at his/her option, may slip any or all of his/her days off without pay to provide time off before or after vacation periods of seven (7) or more days, and may slip up to three (3) of his/her days off without pay to provide time off before or after vacation periods of less than seven (7) days. Additional days may be slipped with Company consent according to the needs of the service."

In addition to the provision above, the following are applicable: (1) such vacation slide does not diminish the reserve's guarantee (2) The days off may only be slipped within the same month they are scheduled (3) To slip days off, it is recommended the reserve contact Crew Scheduling prior to the beginning of the month (4) The selection of how the days off (days to be slid) are attached to the vacation period, or attached to the first available reserve day before or after the vacation is of the reserves choosing.

Example #1 Approved Slide Request: The example below depicts a slide for a reserve that is scheduled to have three (3) vacation days in a month and on such vacation days he/she has three (3) OFF days. Utilizing his/her option to slide the three (3) OFF days, he/she chooses to attach such days to the end of his/her vacation. As such, scheduling approves the request.

Note: The reserve could have attached the three days in any of the other following ways:

14th, 15th and 16th or,
15th, 16th and 20th or,
16th, 20th and 21st.

EX 1 "Approved"

EX 2 "Denied"

14     18
15     19
16     20
17 OFF VAC   21 OFF VAC
18 OFF VAC   22 OFF VAC
19 OFF VAC   23 OFF VAC
20   SLIDE OFF 24 VAC
21   SLIDE OFF 25 VAC
22   SLIDE OFF 26
23     27
24 INV   28   SLIDE OFF*
25 INV   29   SLIDE OFF*
26 INV   30   SLIDE OFF*

Example #2 Denied Slide Request: Conversely, the next example illustrates an "illegal slide request" from a reserve that is scheduled to have five (5) vacation days in the month and on such vacation days he/she has three (3) OFF days. Utilizing his/her option, to slide the three (3) OFF days he/she requests that such days be move to days that are NOT attached to his/her vacation. Such a request is DENIED* because it does not meet the parameters of the slide provision which clearly indicates that all slides must be attached to the beginning and/or the end of the vacation period.
