Dear Members,

SICK CLAIM AUTOMATION

As part of the 2004 Flight Attendant Agreement (Section 8.F) the Company will implement new procedures for claiming sick beginning on August 31, 2006 (the first day of the September bid month).

The changes to the procedures will be handled automatically via CATS.

Effective August 31 the changes are as follows:

  • If you call in sick for a trip, all the duty periods for the trip will be marked as sick and you will be restricted from flying over that period of time. A Flight Attendant will not be prohibited from flying a trip on the same day as a sick call if such a trip would be legal as a double-up or would have had a legal domicile rest following the original trip. For example:

You call in sick for a three pairing# 1234
Operating on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of a month.
You will not be permitted to fly on the 2nd or
the 3rd and will only be permitted to fly on the
4th if you pick up a trip that would have been a
legal double-up( had you flown the original trip)
OR if you had the legal domicile rest on the 4th prior
to the origination of the new trip.

  • The sick claim will be processed automatically and the value of the trip missed at the time of the sick call will be deducted from the Flight Attendants' sick bank at the time of the sick call.
  • If you are a lineholder who does not have a trip but calls in sick you will be charged 3+30 for each day you report sick.
  • If you are a reserve who does not have a trip assigned but called in sick, you will be charged 3+30 a day only if you would have been utilized.

This provision will mean that a line holder will not be allowed to "fly back" their sick time. It also means that a reserve that calls in sick will have the sick claim (if utilized) credited to their LTO at the time of the sick call rather than at the end of the month.

If you have insufficient sick time in your sick bank to cover the claim, the claim will be made for the bank balance you have on record.

Please don't hesitate to contact your AFA representatives if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Mike Flores, President
US Airways Master Executive Council
