Dear Members,
Family Medical Leave Correction Continues
to Build Momentum in US House of Representatives
What stared with one congressional member continues to build momentum in
Congress. Representative Tim Bishop (D-NY) earlier this summer introduced HR
2744 (To amend the Family and Medical Leave Act to clarify the eligibility
requirements with respect to airline flight crews). Since the introduction of
the bill, AFA-CWA has secured 54 cosponsors for this important legislation.
AFA-CWA members have written letters of support to their congressional members
to not only support this legislation but to cosponsor as well. Rather than rely
on emails to their respective legislators, flight attendants have returned to
grassroots organizing by sending letters directly to congressional offices. Why
is this important? The current email system on Capitol Hill is receiving over
one million emails a day. Unfortunately that often means that emails surrounding
our issues do not get the attention they deserve for many weeks. Letters from
AFA-CWA members arriving via old fashion "snail" mail have made a significant
impact in the House. Over the past couple of weeks 20 more members of the House
have added their name to this legislation as a direct result of this campaign.
AFA government affairs volunteers from America West, United, US Airways, AirTran,
American Eagle, and Northwest have encouraged hundreds of members to sign
letters. As well, flight attendants from America West, US Airways, Northwest and
Alaska have visited more than a hundred offices to directly lobby on this issue
alone. Please print up a copy of this letter and sign it with your name and
address. Leave the letters in your LEC Presidents mail file. From there
volunteers will identify the respective legislator and mail it to their office.
Below is a list of cosponsors as of July 27, 2007. If your congressional member
is not on this list it is important to make contact with their office. Congress
will soon recess for the entire month of August. When they return to Washington
in September it is important to have their offices flooded with letters from
your AFA members.

Bipartisan Support Builds for Airline Merger Protection
The FAA Reauthorization Bill continues to proceed through the United States
House of Representatives and Senate. One issue that the Senate included was
merger protection for airline employees. The House version, while in committee,
did not have this language. A bipartisan group of 8 Republicans and Democrats on
the Transportation Committee have written a letter to both the chairman and
ranking member of the committee in support of this proposal. Shane Larson
(Government Affairs Director for AFA-CWA) has worked tirelessly to secure this
bipartisan support. The committee is expected to take up final approval of the
Reauthorization Bill when they return from the August recess.
Late Breaking News
Your AFA-CWA Legislative Policy Committee wanted to let everyone know that AFA
received confirmation this week that the Senate Transportation Appropriations
Bill contains $1 million dollars for the FAA to conduct our flight attendant
fatigue study. The House version of the legislation also calls for the study but
does not spell out a specific dollar amount. AFA has been assured that the House
will accept the amount called for in the Senate bill.
5 members of the House of Representatives have added their names to our FMLA
Bill. Representatives Jim Moran (D-VA), Norm Dicks (D-WA), Hilda Solis (D-CA) Ed
Perlmutter (D-CO) and John Conyers (D-MI) have all joined our fight for this
technical correction to the Family and Medical Leave Act.
Please continue with the letters from your members during the August recess. If
you have any questions please feel free to call your local executive council.
