Dear Members,

HUMAN SWINE FLU VIRUS

The media has been reporting an outbreak of Swine Flu Influenza and other respiratory infections in Mexico City and nearby areas.  There have been reports of Swine Flu in California, New York, Kansas, Ohio and Texas.  These reports total 20 cases of the disease in the United States.

The following information is from the Center for Disease Control (CDC)web site:

CDC and state public and animal health authorities are currently investigating 20 cases of swine flu in humans in California and Texas that may be related to cases in Mexico. At this time there have been no severe illnesses or fatalities seen in the United States.

To date, there have been no reported cases of influenza-like-illness in the resort areas along the coast of Mexico.

CDC has NOT recommended that people avoid travel to Mexico at this time. If you are planning travel to Mexico, follow these recommendations to reduce your risk of infection and help you stay healthy.

Further information from the CDC can be located at the following two web addresses:

http://cdc.gov/

http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/contentSwineFluMexico.aspx

The Company and the Union are monitoring the situation closely.  So far the Company has taken the following steps:

  • monitor the Swine Flu situation

  • brief crews on flights to Mexico

  • make sure plastic gloves are on the a/c as scheduled

  • providing extra gloves in the crew rooms

The Union has asked the Company to provide masks for crew members working flights into Mexico.  At this time, the Company has not responded to that request.

As reported by the CDC and the World Health Organization, the situation is “changing rapidly” and recommends that, “people wash their hands frequently and report any signs of illness in themselves or others to authorities.”

The Union has also been assured by the Company that no aircraft with inoperable potable water systems will be dispatched to Mexico.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Thank you,

Mike Flores, President
The US Airways Master Executive Council
