Dear Members,

NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE

Negotiations continue toward a single agreement. At this point I want to dispel two rumors that are being circulated via "jumpseat wireless".

Rumor #1 - Why are we negotiating a new contract if everything "snaps back" to the 2000 contract at the end of 2011?

Answer - We are negotiating a single agreement because very little in our existing contract that "snaps back" upon the amendable date of December 31, 2011. The few provisions that do "snap back" on January 1, 2012 are:

  • International Senior and Aft lead Premiums
  • Domestic Aft Lead Premiums
  • Training pay increased to a flat rate of $75.00 (currently a flat rate of $60.00)
  • Premium pay for vacation
  • Return of the uniform cleaning allowance of $20 per month.
  • Return of International Premium Pay for Non-Transoceanic International Flights

We are scheduled for a 1% pay increase 1/1/10, a 1% increase 1/1/11 and a 3% increase 1/1/12. The top out rate beginning in 2012 will be $41.51 per credit hour - a far cry from the top out rate of $45.71 that was in the 2000 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

There are no "snap backs" for vacation, sick, scheduling, reserve, hours of service, split trips and everything else in our contract other than the above items.

Please remember that although the current contract becomes amendable at the end of 2011 it would be years after that before a new agreement was reached.

The current contract was the result of two bankruptcies and two Restructuring Agreements and the contract does not meet the needs of the Flight Attendants. The contract clearly meets the needs of the Company and that is why they have been reluctant to make substantive changes without a fight.

Rumor #2 - Why has AFA cancelled the last few negation sessions?

Answer - AFA has not cancelled the last few negotiations sessions. It has been reported to me that one particular member of Senior management has told Flight Attendants working flights he was on that AFA had cancelled the last eight negotiation sessions. Now, all this may be hearsay or maybe not. The fact is we have not cancelled the last eight sessions - period.

The Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) met with the Company last week in PHX. The meetings focused on the Scheduling Section of the merged agreement. The Company had previously presented the JNC with two counter proposals that were virtually identical and showed very little movement towards the Union's proposal. The JNC told the Company their Scheduling proposal was concessionary and we are not engaging in concessionary bargaining. After the Union told the Company we believed they were bargaining in bad faith, the Company made some changes to their committee and took their previous proposal off the table.

The last two sessions have been moderately productive although those two sessions have not produced any formal agreement. The JNC is scheduled to meet with the Company next week and we hope we see some tangible proof of good faith bargaining.

RESERVE NFL AND QUICK CALL

Reserves that have been assigned an NFL and are legal to fly are allowed to make the mselves available for a Quick Call at any time during the NFL day. Previously Scheduling was imposing a noon cut off time. The cut off time has been eliminated.

TEL AVIV UPDATE

Service to Tel Aviv from PHL begins in July. Cultural and Aircraft Differences training began today in PHL. AFA has some concerns with some of the cultural aspects of the training and will be meeting with management over the next few days to discuss those concerns. More information will be forthcoming after the Union meets with management.

The Company has not changed their position regarding Flight Attendant crew bunks. The Union has followed the contractual provision that allows us to call for a neutral referee from a panel selected by the National Mediation Board to resolve the issue. The Company and the Union have struck for a referee and we are in the process of setting a date for the arbitration.

While I am not going to try the case in an Eline, I will say the following:

The Union is very concerned about the Company's lack of consideration toward Flight Attendant rest on long haul flights. The Union believes the Company's sole concern is saving money at the expense and welfare of its' Flight Attendants and passengers.

Thank You
