Dear Council 41 Members,

Labor Day

On behalf of myself and the LEC Secretary, Steve Schembs, we would like to wish you all a happy Labor Day weekend. Being Labor Day it has caused me to reflect on the state of the labor movement in our country. To put it bluntly, it is not good. With a very anti-labor White House and Congress we find ourselves banging our heads against a wall. Pension, wages and health care are under attack or largely ignored because they are not the issues of the most power, the wealthiest citizens of our country. Our industry, more than most, has seen some of the darkest days of the modern labor movement. Pension's frozen or terminated, wages turned back to pre-deregulation levels and rising health care premiums that transcend all labor groups. It has been a rough road for aviation workers.

With all that being said I am hopeful that the tide may be turning. With midterm congressional elections coming up in November, labor has the opportunity to take back our country. Many congressional members who have not support labor find themselves in very difficult races. It puts a smile on my face. Labor stands to take back Congress during this midterm election. That will only happen if union members take the time to vote. Over the next couple of months you will be hearing from AFA-CWA and myself the importance of voting and who has and has not support your union the past couple of years. I will also point out the voting record of those seeking reelection and why they deserve your vote or why their challenger should replace them. Let me say this first, these recommendations are only concerning labor and flight attendant issues and have nothing to do with other social issues. My focus will be on those candidates that support labor and those who do not, I will leave the greater social issues to each member when it comes time to vote. While some will not agree with my endorsements it is my responsibility to highlight who is our friend and who is our enemy. Please take the time to register to vote and get your absentee ballot if flying on Election Day.

As LEC President I must say thank you to all the DCA flight attendants. You make my job very easy with your professional manner and how well you do your job. It is an honor to serve such a great group. While the challenges of being a union representative may never stop, your professionalism makes it all the easier. Once again thank you.

I hope you have a safe holiday weekend.

In Solidarity,

Alin Boswell
