Senator Edward Kennedy

Regardless of political persuasion - whether someone is a conservative Republican or liberal Democrat - hundreds of millions of U.S. citizens were deeply saddened to hear of the news about Senator Ted Kennedy's medical diagnosis. His colleagues from all ends of the political spectrum took to the Senate floor to let him know that he is in their thoughts and prayers. Throughout his 4 decades in the US Senate, Senator Kennedy has worked with Republicans and Democrats in Congress and the White House to make life better for working women and men in this country. He continues to be the "lion of the Senate" and the outpouring of support and best wishes from President Bush, members of both parties in the House and Senate and throughout Washington demonstrates the profound respect he has.

For AFA members, Senator Kennedy has played an important role in many of our issues. He has stood beside us and all of organized labor in countless fights. Specifically, he stood with US Airways flight attendants during their contract battle against Steve Wolf in the late 90's, has fought to get OSHA workplace safety and health protections for flight attendants, advocated for passage of seniority integration merger protections, championed our FMLA fairness legislation and most recently has led the fight against Delta management's hostile anti-AFA campaign. He has not only been a friend to AFA, but a committed and true champion.

We all remain hopeful that he will get through this difficult period. We hope you all will join us in sending a get well card and message to Senator Kennedy. We encourage you all to spread the word and have as many AFA members send him cards to let him know that we are thinking of him and praying for him during this time. Let's start an old fashioned "card shower" of best wishes from flight attendants across this country. Please take a few moments to sign a card and list yourself as a flight attendant. For example, Joan Smith, US Airways flight attendant.

Cards can be mailed to Senator Kennedy's Boston office at:
Senator Edward Kennedy
John F. Kennedy Federal Building
Suite 2400
Boston, MA 02203

House Votes 402-9 for Flight Attendant FMLA Legislation

While the House of Representatives voted 402-9 for AFA-CWA's technical correction to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) we are only half way there. If the Senate doesn't take action all our hard work will just die on the vine.

We still need several area senators to cosponsor our legislation, S. 2059. Below are the office contact numbers and a script when calling the offices. Please make the call today!

Senator Jim Webb (VA) 202.224.4024
Senator John Warner (VA) 202.224.2023
Senator Bob Casey (PA) 202.224.6324
Senator Elizabeth Dole (NC) 202.224. 6342
Senator Richard Burr (NC) 202.224.3154

Sample Script

My name is ________ and I am calling as a voter in your state and a flight attendant. I am asking that the Senator cosponsor S. 2059, the Airline Flight Crew Technical Corrections Act.

This bill is a priority for all flight crewmembers and for me.

I would really appreciate the Senator's support. Again, tell the Senator to please cosponsor S. 2059

Please, make the call TODAY!

Thank you,
