SICK POLICY RESCINDED

The Company has agreed to make changes to the sick leave policy that was implemented after the December 2002 negotiations. These changes are on an interim basis and are contingent on the current negotiations between AFA and the Company.

The Company has agreed to the following:

  • Line holders will no longer be subject to a sick line value (SLV) and the five-hour penalty/pay reduction will not apply;
  • Reserve flight attendants will be able to claim up to their option maximum at the end of the month, i.e., a reserve flight attendant will not be able to use a sick claim to call out of time. Reserve flight attendants can claim sick leave for an awarded trip or for a trip flown by a reserve flight attendant with more time in the least time order reserve system. These sick leave changes will be effective beginning in the month of August. Just a reminder, usage of sick leave is for an illness of the employee only.
  • All F/As can now claim up to their option maximum
  • SLV calculations will be suspended during this interim time period
  • The five (5) hour penalty will be suspended.
  • Reserves will have the option to claim sick time up to their option maximum. (See below)

What this means for Reserves is that a sick claim will be calculated at the end of the month. Any time a Reserve claims as sick will be held out of LTO calculations. A Reserve will not be able to call "out of time sick". For example if a Reserve calls in sick for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of the month that claim (either actual time or daily rate) will be processed at the end of the month. You will still have 0:00 in your LTO calculation on the 4th. At the end of the month you can bring that claim in to add to your time flown. Sick claims will be capped at your option maximum. If you were to happen to fly to your option maximum, (FAT CHANCE) you would have no sick claim. If you do not break guarantee you will be charged the amount necessary to bring you to guarantee.

Sick claims for Reserves who do not break guarantee will be processed automatically. Additional sick claims will be at the F/A's option and can be claimed using theHub or Catcrew.

Remember, this is an interim policy and as negotiations continue it is subject to change.

NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE

The Company and the Negotiating Committee continue to meet. While it is difficult to contain rumors I urge all of you to try. In an effort to keep you informed the MEC voted to publish the proposals that result for your review. I anticipate that will happen soon.

EMPLOYEE BUS FALLS

Since the relocation of the employee parking lot there have been numerous falls resulting in injuries to F/As. Some have been serious, resulting in time off for many of you. Some of these injuries were covered as an OJI and some were not. The buses the city of Charlotte uses for our employee lot are not suited for that task. Narrow stairways, uneven steps and limited access are all contributing to falls and subsequent injuries. I approached VP Sherry Groff in June regarding this issue. She followed up and reported that the city maintains there have not been any reported problems. I know this is not true. If you have been injured as a result of a fall please call the office or fax any documentation you have to us. The fax # is 704 527-5040. My goal is to have the city replace the existing buses with the more "user friendly" type. I will also investigate filing a grievance for those who were denied OJI.
