AIRCRAFT CLEANING ISSUES

I have been informed there are a number of issues regarding the cleanliness of our fleet as well as the appearance and conduct of the utility/contract cleaners. It has been reported the condition of the fleet is deteriorating with respect to cleanliness. Mold and mildew in the galleys, air vents and floors have been reported. Stained seats and floors and dirty lavatories are clearly visible to crews and passengers. While language in our contract now requires us to “tidy” the aircraft more frequently it does not absolve the Company of providing a clean environment for us to work in or passengers to experience. Allowing an aircraft to fly all day without the lavatories being cleaned or stains and spills cleaned up is unacceptable. While it is within the scope of our duties to mop up galley floors during flight it is not our duty once the airplane is on the ground.

It has also been reported utility/contract cleaners are not cleaning the lavatories or performing other required cleaning needs. It appears they are simply emptying the trash and leaving. Reports also indicate that the RON cleaning of various aircraft is substandard. Cleaning personnel have been seen in several stations in unacceptable attire (jeans and halter tops for example) during through stops.

We have a right to work in a clean environment and the Company has a responsibility to provides such.  Our customers have a right to fly on clean aircraft. Cost saving measures should not be allowed to usurp fundamental rights or workplace laws. When I have spoken to management about these problems I have been told they are either rumors or exaggerations. In order to dispel both notions and have these issues seriously addressed I am asking for your help. I have included a link to the Cabin Cleanliness Form you can complete and submit to let me know the specific details regard a cleaning issue. Please be as detailed as possible and include all pertinent information particularly the date, flight number and aircraft tail number.  The link is:

You may also print forms to take with you and distribute to your fellow crewmembers.  The completed form can be faxed to me at 704 527-5040. With enough specific information I can show management the problems we all know exist. As a further step please refer passenger who complain to the complaint/comment form in the “Attache” magazine. As we all know the Company assigns more weight to customer complaints vs. employee complaints.

VFLR

The Company must receive your VFLR bid by 2359 (EST) Wednesday, April 20, 2005 to be considered. Please remember if you have previously submitted a bid and wish to retract it you must do so prior to the bid award. The Company will make the awards and notify the successful bidders very shortly (possibly on April 21, 2005) after the bid closes. You will not be able to retract your award once notified of your award and release date. In other words to be safe you should retract prior to the bid closing date. One you have been awarded a release date you are locked in and will not be allowed to retract your bid.

Thank You,

Mike Flores
