Pa Governor Rendell Directs Immediate Assistance For US Airways Workers In Allegheny County

HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Edward G. Rendell today instructed the Department of Labor & Industry to provide immediate and comprehensive job-assistance services to employees who might be laid off by US Airways in Allegheny County.

US Airways announced Wednesday that it would permanently reduce operations at the Pittsburgh International Airport.

"L&I's rapid response team will work closely with all affected employees who may be laid off," Governor Rendell said.

"Comprehensive job assistance and training will be made available to affected employees who elect not to leave the Pittsburgh area. It is imperative the services are made available as soon as possible to help those affected workers transition into other employment."

The Department of Labor & Industry has already contacted the airline and union leaders to schedule informational meetings with the affected employees regarding the benefits and services available to them and their families.

Services could include up to 26 weeks of state unemployment compensation. Job search, career counseling, information about health care options, assistance with professional job placement, skills assessment, community resources and retraining through the Department of Labor & Industry's rapid response coordination services and the Pennsylvania CareerLink network are also available to affected employees.
