  • AFA ELECTION INFORMATION TABLE IN CREW ROOM TO PROVIDE VOTER REGISTRATION, ABSENTEE BALLOTS, BALLOTING INFORMATION - DENIED BY THE COMPANY

Dear Members,

AFA ELECTION INFORMATION TABLE IN CREW ROOM TO PROVIDE VOTER REGISTRATION, ABSENTEE BALLOTS AND BALLOTING INFORMATION - DENIED BY THE COMPANY

The company denied the AFA Legislative Committee the ability to man and set up an election information table in each domicile crew room consisting of absentee ballots and voter registration information citing it was against the company's 'Solicitation Policy' highlighted below/ found on page 23 in the Employee Handbook.

"Solicitation of any kind (including soliciting and collecting funds, Or posting or distributing written, printed or electronic materials, at the time either the soliciting or solicited employee is on duty and or in a work area, unless written Company authorization is obtained in advance"

More and more flight attendants need to work extra days just to make ends meet. And many more flight attendants are commuting. The convenience of having registration information and absentee ballots available in the crew room area just makes sense. This is not soliciting, this is informational, and this is helping out the employee.

The United Way campaign activities are closer to soliciting than an informational table on voter registration in varying states and absentee ballot information. The United Way Campaign is not a problem but making it more convenient and easier for the flight attendant group to obtain voter registration information or to pick up an absentee ballot is against this policy?

F Y I - The Pegasus Project is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to Flight Attendants who are unable to fly due to a critical or life-threatening illness or injury. If you know of a Flight Attendant in need of assistance please direct them to the Pegasus toll free voice mail @ (866) 785-0449 or visit our website at www.thepegasusproject.org.

The United Way keeps approximately 10% of any contribution you give for paying their people to administer the funds. If you give to a favorite charity, consider donating directly. Should you choose to donate to the Pegasus Project, you may do so directly and not through the United Way. That way your entire donation/contribution goes to Pegasus, nothing is deducted for administrative costs. Any charitable donation/contribution is tax deductible.

It is ok for this company to send to their 'frequent flyers' via e-mail and letters asking that the customer/ dividend mile participant to please contact their legislators to ask about the rising oil prices but to afford their own employees the ease of picking up an absentee ballot or information on their state's voter registration does not matter and is considered solicitation?

Maybe this company, like so many others, is frightened that a union worker may vote for political candidates that favor the rights of union workers and vote for those political candidates that support important issues to labor. Or for those candidates that understand labor has to work more hours to make ends meet while only a company's upper echelon reap the rewards. We can only surmise as this denial and the reason given IS unreasonable. Next thing you know, some in management will be saying they can see Russia from their office window.

Here is a website to visit for voter registration information.

Also, please visit the US Airways AFA website and reference the AFA MEC Legislative Update as it has additional information. www.afausairways.org

Please take the time to vote, it is important. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please contact the local office.
