Dear Members,
Secondary Lines / BOS
There have been some inquires as to why there is so much open time in
BOS, and why aren't there more secondary lines?
John Petronzi/Manager of Flight Attendant Scheduling requires 20% reserve factor. Therefore, as soon as the secondary line building program detects that only 20% reserves would be left on "available status" to the Company the programmer stops building lines. There have been times whereby John Petronzi has approved less than 20% reserve but not very often. It is not the AFA Scheduling Committee or anyone at AFA that let's the Company operate with high amounts of open time. It is the company that determines how many reserves are on duty per day, week, and month.
Below is an overview for the secondary lines of flying for
BOS/August
High open time of 19.4%. Why?
BOS August Secondary Lines - (formula)
180 active headcount
Minus 123 primary line holders
57 reserves remain
Minus 36 19.5% reserve factor for August
*21 / construct this amount of lines

Weekend Obligation (BOS trip 04087)
Some questions have surfaced regarding a Flight Attendants weekend obligation when a duty period consists of only a deadhead. Example: Published BOS trip 04087 - SAT/SUN - In this particular situation, the 2nd duty period (SUN) is created because it is not legal to schedule the crew to deadhead on the 1st duty period (SAT) (over 14:00) - The question: Am I obligated to "touch" SUN?
Discussions with John Petronzi/Manager of Crew Scheduling, regarding this trip, yielded the answer being
NO. John and the AFA Implementation committee are still working through various other situations regarding duty periods consisting only of a deadhead. He advised that until this process is complete and decisions in every scenario have been resolved, schedulers will still place the
Flight Attendant, who trip improves, in the case of the BOS example, on the AIL to touch SUN. He advised that the
Flight Attendant should notify the LECP/BOS, who will then contact John and he will remove the
Flight Attendant from their obligation. Example: Flight Attendant scheduled to fly trip 04087/ SAT/SUN, trip improves FRI/SAT, scheduling will place
Flight Attendant on the AIL for SUN, contact LECP/BOS who will notify John to remove
Flight Attendant from the AIL/SUN obligation. The reason for this temporary procedure is that John does not want to change the procedure for scheduling until all situations are resolved. Please do not debate the issue with scheduling. Should you have additional questions, please contact the
Council/69/BOS Officers.
Thanks,
Lynne Caramello
