Dear Members,
MEC Meeting update July 7, 2005
Election Results
On July 7, 2005, at a scheduled meeting in PIT, the MEC held an election for the AFA USAirways Flight Attendant Contract Merger Negotiator. The successful candidate is Carol Austin. It is anticipated that negotiations will begin late winter 2005/early 2006. America West flight attendants are still in Section 6 negotiations as well as the USAirways/ America West merger has not been fully consummated.
Seniority Integration Merger Committee Update
The agenda at this meeting also included an update from the AFA USAirways Seniority Integration Merger Committee representatives, John Humphries and Marianne Moore. The representatives have moved forward with the documentation on all
Flight Attendants and once the list is completed, all Flight Attendants will be notified via certified mail of their seniority.
Upon completion, notifications of mailings and well as appeal information will be posted via the MEC E-Line including consideration of Crew room posters.
Shane Larson / AFA - CWA International Chair of Government Affairs
Shane Larson attended the MEC Meeting in PIT to provide an update regarding various issues being discussed on Capital Hill. Among these issues were Flight Attendant Fatigue, Cell Phone use in the cabin of an aircraft while in flight and Defined Benefit Pension Plans being dumped by airlines to the PBGC and the need for legislation. If you wish to visit the Government Affairs website, please go to:
www.afanet.org click on the Government Affairs section.
Shane also advised that a meeting will be held in September with AFA-CWA LEC Legislative Affairs Chairs to discuss more ways of campaigning these issues and to once again advise flight attendants of the importance of contributing to AFA Flight PAC. FYI -USAirways is considering a payroll check off for an airline PAC fund. Do not be confused, this PAC fund will be for the company use and not AFA.
AFA-CWA Bag tags depicting no cell phone use and Lance Armstrong styled fatigue bracelets are being considered. Please review the list of Democrats and Republicans who fought on behalf of Flight Attendant Fatigue located on the AFA/BOS Crew Room Board and the MEC-E-line. AFA Flight PAC Fund contributes to both Democrats and Republicans when they assist and fight on issues directly related to Flight Attendants.
Any BOS Flight Attendant interested in involvement with Legislative Affairs Committee work, please contact the Council/69/BOS officers. Even if you do not have the time to offer assistance, please consider a contribution to AFA Flight PAC. A contribution of as a little as a $1.00 or $2.00 per pay, helps tremendously. Just food for thought, folks.
Marianne Moore, MEC Legislative Affairs Committee Chair welcomes any level of participation. The BOS/LEC position was vacated by Chris Atwood former BOS/VP therefore should any BOS
Flight Attendant be interested in this position, please contact the
Council 69 (council69@afausairways.org).
Reserve PER Day - Update
The company and AFA remain in disagreement over the formula the company applies to reserves for using a PER day in a month when a reserve does not break guarantee. Prior to filing a grievance, AFA tried to reason with the company over this, unwritten formula as it pertains to a PER day under these circumstances but discussions yielded the same results. The company stated that the reduction is done automatically which should yield the same charge per
Flight Attendant and the formula applied is justified. This is not the case as inconsistencies exist per documentation supplied by BOS reserve
Flight Attendants. A grievance will be filed and it is anticipated that arbitration will be heard sometime in September. Any BOS reserve
Flight Attendant that used a PER day, did not break guarantee during the month the PER day was used, please supply pay stubs w/ pay sheets. You may supply copies or originals, copies will be made and originals returned. Please provide these documents to BOS/Inflight, in an envelope as there is an AFA/LECP Caramello mail file in the Inflight office. These documents are considered confidential so please do not place them in the Council/69/LECP mail room mail file. Or you may fax your information to the MEC Office/ PIT at: 1 412-262-2310, heading: PER Day Reserve Reduction / BOS Reserve / Grievance Evidence
Since ETB time and the date of the PER day is not designated on the Pay sheet, please highlight or circle the ETB time as well as note the date of the PER day. If you had a discussion with payroll, please also note the reduction amount they supplied. Thank you to those reserve
Flight Attendants who supplied documentation already. I know there are more of you out there, please take the time to provide this documentation.
VPLOA - September
Please make note of the CBS message related to the benefits portion of the VPLOA. No benefits, including vacation/sick accruals are suspended for this leave as the
Flight Attendant is treated as if on ACTIVE STATUS. It is just an unpaid leave.
Reserve lines/patterns - August
It is anticipated that the Reserve lines/patterns for August will consist of less to no lines/patterns of 2/3/3/3 mix as well as consideration of less reserve lines with AVL days on weekends. This change was a result of discussions with John Petronzi/Manager Crew Scheduling and Council 69/LECP. This will assist both reserves and line holders in BOS in the following way: (1) Due to the lessening of the 2/3/3/3 mix of reserve lines/patterns and more mix of OFF/INV days in succession, it, in essence, creates a larger "pool" of flight attendants, available to pick up time off the ETB allowing line holders a greater success of completing the drop transaction. Due to the BOS trip dynamics, i.e. a large amount of trips leaving before the 10:00 buffer and arriving after the 18:00 buffer, it sometimes requires a reserve an extra day to pick up time off the ETB. (2) The weekend restrictions placed on line holders coupled with the current situation of more reserve lines/ patterns with AVL days on the weekends, result in reserves not getting any time on the weekends. Lessening the reserve lines/patterns of AVL days on the weekends, allows more flexibility to a line holder as it creates a larger "pool" of flight attendants considering picking up time off the ETB during the weekends and the transaction for dropping a weekend trip may be met with a greater success. It is very difficult for a line holder to TWOP on the weekend, even today with reserves on AVL days during the weekend, as this request is at the discretion of scheduling and is based on coverage. John Petronzi/Manager Crew Scheduling advised it is not just reserve availability that is considered. Numerous factors are considered such as but not limited to; the number of line holders on the AIL/ holding trips and not holding trips, weather, coverage in other bases, etc.
The anticipated changes in the reserve lines/patterns for August will be monitored to see if it does in deed allow more flexibility to all the flight attendants in BOS. If it does not, it is back to the drawing board and discussions will commence again with John Petronzi.
Thanks,
Lynne Caramello
