Dear Members,
Union Voice Union Commentary Union E-Line
Air Quality Incidents
Air Quality Incidents are continuing to occur with no
information coming from the company. Some comments from the
company about investigating these instances but yet no public
statement. Another aircraft #752 joins the list of a/c that have
had an Air Quality problem - 758 - 751- 749- 744 -738 - 713 all
have had problems with the air quality - causing flight
attendants to feel ill some not returning to work after the
incident. One flight attendant in particular has had 6(six) Air
Quality Incidents since DEC 08, the first causing side effects
that kept the flight attendant from returning to work. This
flight attendant is back to work but continuing the appeal
stages as the flight attendant was denied Workers Compensation
during his absence. AIG denied the claim. Please remember that
AIG is working for/hired by U S Airways to administer the
company's workers compensation claims. Other flight attendants
denied Workers Compensation due to Air Quality incidents have
had very, very long ordeals through the appeal process but have
ultimately won their cases. Some still not returning to work.
In these recent instances, aircraft swaps have occurred as the
smell is so strong throughout the cabin the crew will not take
the aircraft.
Each flight attendant was issued an Air Quality card check list
from AFA . Please carry it with you in case you encounter any
Air Quality problems. Please ensure that you provide an SER (
Safety Event Report) and keep a copy for yourself and send one
to your local or MEC Safety Chairperson. ( Information is
provided on the card) AFA has requested but has not been allowed
to receive a copy upon submission. AFA sees no reason for this
denial and will continue to pursue being listed as a recipient
when a flight attendant submits this report via the HUB. Keep
communications open with the cock pit crew, ask that maintenance
be contacted and the log book be reviewed, advise the Captain to
please write up the problem in the log book, check to see if
passengers are also feeling ill or comment about the smell, and
take down their information.
We would like to know what the company is doing to prevent these
Air Quality instances from occurring. The most recent instance,
a/c 752 there was an MEL sticker reflecting a problem. Why was
the a/c scheduled to operate without being fixed? Will we
continue to see MEL stickers on aircraft with air quality
problems? The first flight of the day for a/c 752 was canceled.
Call the local in-flight departments ask them what the company
is doing to prevent these air quality occurrences, ask them why
no information is being provided to flight crews about what they
are doing. These airplanes are making crew sick and perhaps our
passengers.
MEX Cancellations July -
A list was provided to the AFA, because we asked, that reflects
more flight cancellations that will effect crewmembers already
holding July lines of time containing trips with these
cancellations. Scheduling has advised that they were/are not
going to contact any flight attendants affected until after
secondary line awards. ( June 14) Before you complete your SAP
please check with your local office to see if any MEX
destination flights/ trips in your line are cancelled. On the
list provided by the company - Boston, flights 809 and 810 will
be cancelled July, 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26, - Basically
most of line 8012 -
AFA has absolutely no knowledge of the company reinstating any
of these canceled flights.
Please review the CBS message below dated May 8th, 2009 . As
noted in previous e-lines AFA has filed a grievance against the
company. AFA has contacted Labor Relations/PHX to discuss these
recent cancellations and we want to discuss re consideration of
our proposal but as recent as this afternoon a secretary's voice
mail in Labor Relations has answered and no return contact with
AFA has been made. Again, no one responsible for making the
decision to cancel these flights will loose a dime of pay, no
one.

Subject: Pay Protection - Mexico Cancellation Due to H1N1
Outbreak
As you are aware, the Company made the decision last Friday to
reduce flying
in and out of Mexico because of a weaker demand for travel as a
result of the
H1N1 outbreak. Affected pairings have been canceled entirely or
specific
flight segments have been removed and the pairings have been
repaired. Flight
attendants with canceled segments or pairings affecting their
last trip or
last series of trips are provided pay protection consistent with
the Flight
Attendant Agreement per Section 9.G.5.
Flight attendants losing time as a result of cancellations to
pairings that do
not involve the last trip of the month will be afforded two
options. These
options being provided are specific to the Mexico cancellations
associated

with the H1N1 outbreak only. All other cancellations will be
handled according
to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, e.g., responsible for
making up lost
time and reasonable effort requirements for line guarantee
protection.
These options include:
1. Flight Attendants may reduce their flying obligation by the
amount of the
lost time without being considered a low block
2. Flight Attendants may fly back the lost time by utilizing the
ETB or AIL
processes
At the end of the bid month, a flight attendant who elects not
to fly back the
time or is unsuccessful at flying back all or part of the lost
time, will be
entitled to a monthly minimum guarantee claim as defined in
Section 3.B.
A lineholder who voluntarily gives up a trip(s), e.g., ETB, TWOP,
Sick without
available sick time, etc., to reduce his/her credited time below
71 hours,
shall have his/her applicable guarantee reduced accordingly.
Pay protection claims for last trip of the month or minimum
guarantee should
be submitted to Crew Administration. Claims will be processed at
the
conclusion of the bid month.
