USA - AWA Proposed Merger

By now all of you are aware of the announced USAirways Group-America West Holdings merger. The International President Patricia Friend has activated Section X.B of the AFA Constitution and By-Laws that calls for an initial meeting between the MEC Officers at each airline.

The scheduled meeting will be on Wednesday, June 8th, at the International Office of AFA-CWA in Washington DC. The purpose of the meeting is to brief and orient the members of both MECs on Union policy and procedures for the settling of seniority merger and contractual issues in the anticipated merger.

As noted in the most recent MEC E-Line, applications for (2) merger representatives are available for any flight attendant interested in these positions along with a link to review the expectations and responsibilities of the position. An online application is also available HERE (http://www.afausairways.org/mec/onlineapp.html). Please take a moment to review Section X of the Constitution and By-Laws. You can access the C & B on the AFA Website at http://www.afausairways.org/policy/section_x.htm.

In addition to the meeting on June 8th, the USAirways MEC has been extended an invitation by Jeff McClelland, America West Chief Operating Officer, to meet with America West senior management at the America West headquarters building in Tempe, Arizona. A tentative date for the meeting is set for June 28th.

Just another FYI - America West Flight Attendants are still in Section 6 negotiations.

MEC Meeting/PIT

The USAirways MEC meeting will be held in PIT on June 14,15,16.

Hearing on USAirways Retention Bonuses

A hearing will be held on May 31st, at 9:30 a.m. in Alexandria Va. regarding USAirways request for retention Bonuses for management employees at USAirways. Please review USAirways AFA-CWA OBJECTION documents available off the link on the MEC E-line and the AFA Website.

ETB Issues

The implementation committee and Rob Fuhr/Director of Crew Scheduling are still in discussions regarding how reserves will utilize the ETB moving forward. Question at hand, will reserves be able to pick up ETB trips in advance and how will a trip assignment and ETB conflict be handled. A review of reserve patterns must be done as the percentage of 2333/mix patterns are very high in BOS and other bases and places further restrictions on the ability for a reserve to pick up trips off the ETB. This also hampers a line holder's ability to successfully drop trips by lessening the "pool" of f/as able to pick up off the ETB. The MEC is waiting to be presented with a conclusive improvement to review and approve.

ETB Trainers

A thank you to the ETB Crew room Trainers for their patience in instruction and assistance in providing information to Flightline for issues that have surfaced with the ETB program. The company extended ETB trainers for BOS/DCA/PIT for the 24/25/26 of May. Council 69 has extended one ETB Trainer for crew room assistance on May 29/30/31. Should you have future issues with the ETB, please contact your LEC Officers.

Enhanced Medical Leave of Absence

Teddy Xidas/MEC President fought long and hard, strongly supported by this MEC, with management regarding medical coverage for flight attendants on medical leaves. The ratified agreement only provided for coverage of 90 days at active rate for all medical leaves. Senior management agreed to change this language from 90 days active rate to 180 days active rate for all unpaid Medical Leaves including, Maternity, LTD, and OJI. After 180 days on any Medical Leave the company will offer COBRA. This new provision will go into effect on June 1, 2005. Those who are currently on medical leaves are "grandfathered" to the old language of 1 year active rate. The company moved on this with "no exchange" for something else.

Completed Contract

The implementation committee is still working on compiling all the contract language from the 2000 Agreement, July concessionary, December concessionary, Reserve language changes and the recent ratified agreement. The MEC is greatly anticipating a completed document to be made available to all flight attendants. The importance of having "one venue" for all contract language is paramount.

Pilot BID

As a result of the pilot bid, BOS will be reduced one line in September. (40 lines)

Reminders

Anytime you speak with scheduling/ETB desk, note the name of scheduler, time and date.

If you want to TWOP a trip, advise scheduling prior to 12:00 noon. Line holders may want to continually review option 18 to keep abreast of reserve coverage. Timing is everything. There is a difference between a straight 'drop" of a trip and TWOPing a trip. Please keep this in mind when deciding how you want to adjust your schedule and obligation.

Displacements/PIT/ VFLR award

Four (4) flight attendants will be joining the ranks in BOS due to the recent displacements in PIT on June 1. Five (5) flight attendants in BOS have been awarded the VFLR for June 1.
