Dear Members,

Union Voice Union Commentary Union E-Line

MEX Cancellations Pay Protections - Grievance filed

The union has filed a MEC Grievance regarding the pay protections of flight attendants affected by cancelled MEX destination flights/pairings. As noted, in the past the company recognized the financial hit to the flight attendant and was willing to extend more pay protections in addition to the contractual provisions. Additionally, the company is in violation of applying ETB time flown against any claim realized up to 71:00 guarantee. This management group was not interested in providing any other provisions and disregarded any past practice pay provisions.

Letters of Apology - US Airways Magazine Advertisement

Thanks. We all feel so much more respected.

Aircraft visits by Flight Attendants on Company Business/Company Projects

Anytime a flight attendant working on behalf of the company steps on an airplane to ask you questions, provides information, instruction, etc. it would be respectful of them to introduce themselves and to explain their purpose. If it is during a period of down time and you wish to take the time to eat a meal, review mail, sit quietly prior to the next flight, walk into the terminal to purchase food, use the facilities, etc. nothing says you have to stay for any instruction or questions. There is no training between flights. You may want to politely and respectfully decline spending time with this flight attendant on company business during your down time. The individual should not be discussing discipline for compliance issues. If you encounter such an individual making statements of impending discipline for compliance issues, there is no need to debate the issue, please provide documentation of such to the local union office/representative and we will in turn provide it to the company to investigate and address.

Hand washing between flights

If the water is shut off on the aircraft between flights so not to allow you to thoroughly wash your hands after tidying, please provide this documentation to the local safety representative. jatwood@afausairways.org - flight # /date/a/c# - The practice of shutting down the water supply between flights does not seem prudent in this Swine flu environment. This information can be provided to the company to discuss temporary options until the concern level about the spread of Swine flu is lifted.

HHD

Can it submit, does it submit, where does it submit..there is only one on board, where is the other one and on and on and on. Safety comes first and foremost at all times. If the HHD is not working properly and it is consuming your time, becomes distracting, do not let it interrupt your safety responsibilites as these are FAA required. You cannot get fined for not using an HHD you can get fined by the FAA for not following safety procedures. Place an inop tag on it, advise a product specialist if available, move on and use the paper documents provided for sales on board the aircraft. The company will not implode if you can not submit that day on that flight. Please, stay focused on safety.

AFA has not seen any document showing any HHD submissions, how anything is calculated, who exactly ( Mr. Clack?) is responsible for reviewing the day to day submissions, how many people are doing this reviewing and /or what pertinent information is the company receiving to operate more efficiently, how many millions of dollars it is saving the company... it is a mystery. Catering will supply a cart filled with pillow sacks locked up with a white seal. Why does a flight attendant have to re- inventory this? Are we checking up on catering? On the vendor that supplies this product? How come no one else is held accountable for their work accept the flight attendants? Like I said, it is a mystery....

Welcome Aboard U S Wal-Mart....

Have we become a flying Wal-Mart.....are we considered flight 'associates' ...For whatever reason, some Einstein thinks it is a great idea to sell these products on flights but also on Shuttle flights. It was recommended that we just do not have the time on most of these shuttle flights and we should not compromise safety to sell 'Twizzlers'. It is impossible. The company touts 'consistency'. How consistent will it be when very few shuttle flights may be able to handle selling these products without compromising safety? File this under: this will take 17 or 18 company conference calls, a production of sample sheets cluttering shelves in crew rooms, CBS 'must read' messages, flight attendants on company business visiting planes doing crew room sits displaying the products for sale taking/ asking questions, surveys taken not made public / not considered. In the end, the flight attendants will ultimately make the executive decision to maintain safety first while many in management do all this 'busy work' trying to figure out how to be consistent. The Shuttle market is a different product and when will this company, way out west, start to realize or listen to the many that have stated this fact to this management group..ahhh, yes, the answer, yet another mystery.

Company Conference Calls

If the company schedules a conference call with a flight attendant and states it is required, it is the same as a meeting. AFA Contract Sec 24 F 8 - A flight attendant who is required to meet with a Company representative shall be entitled to be accompanied by his/her UNION ELECTED representative or another flight attendant, if the flight attendant so desires. If you ever have any questions about meeting/conferencing with company representatives, it may be wise to contact your local union representatives prior to the call.
